Sex Therapy for Midlife Couples in Show Low & Across Arizona and Missouri
When perimenopause changes desire, your relationship doesn't have to lose its spark.
Sex therapy is available for couples and individuals living in Arizona and Missouri. As a Certified Sex Therapist completing my PhD in Clinical Sexology, I help midlife couples understand why desire changed and how to build intimacy that fits the bodies and lives they have now.
Sessions are talk therapy only. Nothing physical ever happens in my office.
Here are some of the places we may start.
-
Maybe one of you wants sex more than the other. Maybe you used to be in sync, and now you're not. One partner reaches and feels rejected. The other pulls away and feels pressured. Before long, even a hug feels loaded, and you avoid touch because it might "lead somewhere."
Mismatched desire is one of the most common reasons couples come to see me. Neither of you is broken, and neither of you is the problem. Together, we will look at the cycle you're caught in and find a way back to each other that doesn't involve keeping score.
-
Perimenopause can change desire almost overnight. Shifting hormones, night sweats, poor sleep, anxiety, and a body that feels unfamiliar can make sex the last thing on your mind. Many women tell me they feel guilty, like they're letting their partner down. Many partners tell me they feel confused and shut out.
Here's what most couples are never told: desire doesn't disappear. It gets harder to reach when your nervous system is exhausted and on high alert. When we help your body feel rested, safe, and unpressured, desire often has room to come back, sometimes in a different form than before.
-
Vaginal dryness, pain during sex, changes in arousal, or simply not feeling at home in your body can make intimacy feel like something to get through rather than enjoy. Pain teaches the body to brace, and bracing makes desire even harder to find.
We will work on reducing pressure, rebuilding comfort, and finding ways to be close that feel good. I'm happy to coordinate with your OB-GYN, menopause provider, or pelvic floor physical therapist, so you're supported from every side.

If you're the partner with higher desire, you may feel lonely, unwanted, or afraid to bring it up again. You might be wondering if your partner still finds you attractive, or if this is just how it's going to be now.
Your feelings matter here too. Part of our work is helping you understand what your partner is going through, and helping your partner understand what the distance feels like for you. When both of you feel heard, the pressure starts to ease.

Starting over in a long relationship
After years together, sex can become routine, rushed, or quietly disappear. Kids, careers, aging parents, and stress take up all the space. Many couples realize they don't know how to talk about sex at all, let alone what they want now.
Together, we will make it safe to talk openly, let go of old expectations about what sex "should" look like, and get curious about what feels good in this season of your life.
My approach is
Gentle: we go at the speed of your nervous systems
Compassionate: nothing you share will shock me
Body-aware: I draw on somatic training to work with what your body is carrying
Evidence-based and ethically sound
I work with couples and individuals across diverse identities and relationship structures, including LGBTQIA+, consensually non-monogamous, and non-traditional partnerships.
How it works
Sessions 1–2 (together): We explore what brought you in, how sex has changed, and what each of you hopes for.
Sessions 3–4 (individual): I meet with each partner on their own to understand your history, your body, and what feels hard to say in front of each other.
Session 5 and beyond (together): We work on the cycle between you, reduce pressure, and build new ways to connect, with simple practices to try at home.
If your partner isn't ready to come in, individual sex therapy is a great place to begin.
This may not be a good fit if you're
Seeking psychiatric or emergency services
Wanting evaluations, documentation, or court letters
In a relationship where there has been physical violence
