Polyvagal-Informed Therapy in Show Low & the White Mountains

Have you ever wanted to connect with your partner but felt your whole body pull away? Or gone numb in the middle of an argument? Polyvagal Theory offers a map for moments like these: your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety or danger, and it decides whether you can connect before your thinking mind catches up. I offer polyvagal-informed therapy to individuals and couples in Show Low and throughout Arizona's White Mountains.

What is Polyvagal Theory?

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, describes three broad states your nervous system moves between:

  • Safe and connected. Calm, curious and open to others.

  • Fight or flight. Anxious, defensive, ready to argue or escape.

  • Shut down. Numb, frozen, collapsed or checked out.

None of these states is "bad." Each one is your body trying to protect you. Polyvagal-informed therapy helps you notice which state you're in and gently guide yourself back toward safety and connection.

How it shows up in therapy

  • Mapping your states. You learn your own early signs of fight, flight or shutdown.

  • Finding your anchors. We discover what helps your body return to calm: a voice tone, a breath, a place, a person.

  • Co-regulation for couples. Partners learn to help each other settle, instead of setting each other off.

  • Creating safety. We build the conditions where intimacy, play and desire can return.

Why it matters for relationships

When your partner's tone sounds sharp, your body may react as if you're in danger, even when you're not. Understanding this takes blame out of the room. The question shifts from "What's wrong with you?" to "What does your nervous system need right now?"

How I use it

I'm an Arizona Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and polyvagal ideas run through all my work: couples therapy, somatic therapy, individual therapy and sex therapy. It isn't a separate treatment. It's a lens that helps us understand what your body is doing and why.

Polyvagal-informed therapy in the White Mountains

In-person sessions are at my Show Low office, serving Pinetop-Lakeside, Snowflake, Taylor, Heber-Overgaard and nearby White Mountains towns. Online sessions are available anywhere in Arizona. For many clients, life in the mountains offers built-in anchors for their nervous system: a walk under the pines, quiet mornings, big open skies.

Polyvagal questions

Is polyvagal therapy a specific treatment? Polyvagal Theory is a framework, not a single technique. I use it to guide couples therapy, somatic work and individual therapy.

Can learning about my nervous system really help my marriage? Many couples find it changes how they see each other. When you know your partner's withdrawal is a shutdown response, not rejection, you can respond differently.

What if I shut down a lot? That's common and understandable. We work slowly and gently, helping your body feel safe enough to come back online.

Do you offer polyvagal-informed therapy online? Yes, for clients anywhere in Arizona, including remote parts of the White Mountains.
