Feeling Lonely in Your Relationship? Therapy in Show Low & the White Mountains

You're not alone in the house. You're alone in the relationship. You may be the one who keeps trying, or the one who stopped. Either way, the quiet between you has gotten loud. Loneliness inside a partnership hurts in a particular way, and it is something we can work on, whether you come alone or together.

What this loneliness can look like

  • You feel unseen by the person who knows you best.

  • Conversations stay on the surface, or turn into the same argument.

  • You've stopped asking for what you need because it doesn't land.

  • You do most of the emotional work, or you've gone numb to protect yourself.

  • You feel guilty for being lonely when life looks good.

What's usually underneath

Most couples get caught in a cycle: one pursues and criticizes, the other withdraws and shuts down, and each one's move makes the other's worse. Underneath are old needs for safety and connection, often shaped by earlier relationships. When we bring that cycle into the light, the two of you stop fighting each other and start facing it together.

What helps

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT helps partners understand their cycle and build a secure, responsive bond. [EFT Couples Therapy →]

  • Individual therapy. If your partner isn't ready, you can start alone. We work on your nervous system, your patterns and what you want. [Individual Therapy →]

Questions about loneliness in a relationship

Is it normal to feel lonely in a marriage? It's very common, and it's usually a sign of lost connection, not lost love. It deserves attention, because it tends to deepen without it.

Do I need my partner to come? No. You can begin alone, and many people do. Change in one partner often changes the whole system. Couples therapy is also available when you're both ready.

Will you tell me whether to stay or leave? No. My role is to help you get clear, calm and honest, so whatever you decide comes from you.

Can individual therapy help my relationship? Yes. When you understand your own patterns and your nervous system, the way you show up changes, and so does the relationship.
