Destination Couples Therapy Intensives in the White Mountains of Arizona

Sometimes an hour a week isn't enough. By the time you settle in, the session is over, and the momentum fades before the next one. A destination intensive takes you out of your routine and into the pines of Arizona's White Mountains for focused, uninterrupted couples work. Phones off. Calendars cleared. Your nervous systems finally away from the daily alarm. You arrive in Show Low, you do the work, and you leave with a clear path forward.

Why travel for therapy?

At home, you're the parent, the employee, the employer, the one who handles everything. The kitchen where you fight is the same place you're supposed to repair. A destination intensive changes the setting so the pattern can change. At about 6,300 feet, with cool air, tall pines and very little noise, your body gets the message that you're not on call. That matters when we're working beneath the thinking mind, where relational trauma and attachment patterns live.

A retreat weekend, step by step

Here is a sample two-day intensive. Every one is shaped around the two of you.

  • Thursday evening (optional). Arrive, settle into your lodging and have dinner in town. Nothing to do yet except slow down.

  • Friday morning (3 hours). We map your cycle: what sets it off, what each of you does to survive it, and what sits underneath.

  • Friday long lunch. Walk, eat, nap or sit quietly. Your nervous systems need this part as much as the sessions.

  • Friday afternoon (2 hours). Body-based work to settle what came up, together.

  • Saturday morning (3 hours). Repair. The conversations you've needed to have, with support and enough time to finish them.

  • Saturday afternoon (2 hours). Build the plan: daily rituals, what to do when the cycle starts, and follow-up sessions.

  • Sunday. Head home, or stay for a hike in the pines.

Come from anywhere

Couples travel to Show Low from the Phoenix area (about 3 hours by car), Tucson, Flagstaff, Albuquerque and beyond. Intensives are held in person in Arizona, so couples from other states are welcome to travel in.

Busy lives, deeper change

Many couples who choose an intensive run businesses, careers or households that don't pause for weekly appointments. Two days away can be an efficient way to start.

Is an intensive right for you?

  • You're recovering from an affair or other betrayal and need concentrated support.

  • You feel stuck, or you're deciding whether to stay together.

  • Weekly sessions don't fit your work schedules or travel.

  • You live in Phoenix, Tucson or elsewhere in Arizona and want a focused getaway.

  • You're a couple who wants to invest deeply before a big transition, like marriage, a new baby or retirement.

What happens during an intensive

  1. Before we meet. Each partner completes an intensive intake questionnaire and we have a quick phone call so the time together is focused from the first minute.

  2. Understanding your cycle. We map the pattern that keeps you stuck and what each of you is protecting.

  3. Deep repair. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method tools and body-based work, you have the conversations you haven't been able to have at home.

  4. Building new habits. You practice new ways of reaching for and responding to each other.

  5. A plan for home. You leave with specific practices and, if helpful, follow-up sessions online.

A retreat in the pines

Show Low sits at about 6,300 feet, where summers stay cool and winters bring snow and quiet. Between sessions, walk a forest trail, share an unhurried lunch, or simply rest. [Describe your intensive venue, such as the golf course setting, and whether the room is private.] Many Valley couples make an intensive part of a weekend away.

Intensive questions

Are intensives effective? Concentrated time can help couples make progress faster than weekly sessions, especially after a crisis. Many couples continue with a few follow-up sessions afterward. If you are traveling from out of state, I will help you find a great therapist in your area to continue sessions with.

Can we do an intensive after an affair? Yes. Intensives are often a good fit after betrayal, because they give both partners enough time to be heard and begin repair.

Can we do part of an intensive online? Intensives are designed for in-person work in Show Low, which is the point of a destination intensive. Follow-up sessions can be online anywhere in Arizona.

Does insurance cover intensives? Intensisves at EROS are private-pay only. A superbill is available for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though coverage for intensives varies.

Where do we stay? Show Low and nearby Pinetop-Lakeside have hotels, cabins and vacation rentals. [ recommended lodging.] Book early for summer and holiday weekends.

Do we have to live in Arizona? No. Couples travel from across Arizona and from other states. Sessions are in person in Show Low.

How do we choose between half-day, full-day and two-day? A half-day fits one focused issue. A full day goes deeper. A two-day intensive gives the most room, including time to rest between sessions. I offer a short call to help couples choose.

Are meals and lodging included? No. Please look at the recommended lodging link for places to stay nearby.
